Buddy Holly\’s Birthday

Buddy Holly was born in 1936, and died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. His hometown was Lubbock, Texas. He has a New Mexico connection: he recorded his first hits at the Norman Petty Recording Studio in Clovis, New Mexico.

Hanhurst lists a singing call, \”That\’ll Be the Day\” on Top (25348), but I don\’t know for sure it\’s the Buddy Holly song. There’s also “Every Day” on Ranch House 901, but it’s not in print.

Maybe your round dance cuer uses other Buddy Holly songs: “Peggy Sue”, “Oh Boy”, “Maybe Baby”, “It’s So Easy”.

Buddy Holly also did a song called “You’re So Square”, about his attraction to a Lawrence Welkie. He also recorded a version of “Wait ‘Til the Sun Shines, Nellie”.

ASCAP formed

This may not help us think of ideas for our dances tonight, but it’s certainly relevant to us. In the early 1990’s (right around the time I started calling), ASCAP and BMI came calling on the square dance community. Seems we were using copyrighted songs without paying the requisite fees. CALLERLAB negotiated an agreement allowing the callers (rather than the officially-liable clubs) to pay an annual fee.

Here’s an interesting history of audio recording.

Nixon on Laugh-In

Presidential candidate Richard Nixon goes on Laugh-In and says, “Sockit to me!”

If you’re calling A2 or higher, this would be an appropriate day to feature the C2 calls Sock It To Me and Here Comes the Judge. You can do this at A2 by starting out with “Prefer the end [boy or girl, as appropriate] for an out roll circulate, and then give the name of the call.
