Movies, Movies, Movies
It’s Oscar day! If you’re stuck calling a dance tonight, you might want to check my list of Academy Award Winning Songs for ideas. Or you could head on over to the IMDb (International Movie Database) and look for movies with square dance in the titles. To save you the effort, there are four:
- Square Dance (1987), with Jason Robards, Jane Alexander, Winona Ryder, and Rob Lowe. Roger Ebert didn’t like it: Square Dance Review
- Square Dance Jubilee (1949). Plot summary:
Two talent scouts for a New York-based country music TV show called “Square Dance Jubilee” are sent out West to get authentic western singing acts. They find what they’re looking for, but also get mixed up in cattle rustling and murder.
- Square Dance Katy (1950), with Barbara Jo Allen (aka Vera Vague). I don’t know whether Barbara played Katie or not. No plot summary available.
- Saturday Night Square Dance (1949). It’s a musical western short.
The Hollywood Connection has a list of movies that have square dance (or some kind of country pattern dance) in them. All of the above (except the short) are listed.
And finally, a description of the Bugs Bunny cartoon with square dancing and calling: Hillbilly Hare.
