Testing, Testing

Not a lot of square dancing; way to much computer stuff.

I’ve connected my laptop (where I run Vic’s Ceder Square Dance System (CSDS)) to my Macintosh LAN. This was an interesting chore, since I had to install a PCMCIA Ethernet Card, and the installation didn’t work the first time…but of course, I don’t know enough about Windows systems to know what didn’t work and what to do about it. After sleeping on the problem, I decided to uninstall and reinstall. This worked, and now I can access our 3Com LANModem from the laptop. This opens up a whole world of software possiblities that I didn’t have before…I may end up doing a lot of webwork on the laptop.

Now I’ve installed some beta software called Pike, which allows me to edit this site in outline mode. I have to admit that I’ve always loved outlining software, starting way back in my early computing days with ThinkTank, Acta, and MORE.

  1. Hmmm…everything in this article is obsolete.

    1. We use DSL now (a Cisco 678 router) instead of dialup using the 3Com LANModem. We also have an Airport Base Station providing WiFi.

    2. Which is good, because I have a (relatively) new Wintel laptop which has a WiFi card. So I can easily access the internet from the Wintel laptop.

    3. Our Macs are mostly running OS X. When the Wintel laptop (running Windows XP Home) is on the network, the Macs can see it. This makes it easy to transfer the square dance MP3s I make on the Macs to the PC.

    4. I no longer use Manilla at EditThisPage.com, so Pike is no longer relevant. I wrote my own PHP software to run this site (probably too much reinventing the wheel, but it was fun). I still love outlining software, and use OmniOutliner from the OmniGroup and Notebook from Circus Ponies. They have different strengths and weaknesses, so I use them for different purposes.
